Residential EV Charger
Installation MN
Full home EV charger installation across Minneapolis, St. Paul and the Twin Cities metro. Dedicated 240V circuit, panel calculations, permits, inspection and Tesla or universal charger setup.
What a home EV
charger install actually involves.
A home EV charger is not a plug-in appliance. It is a dedicated 240V circuit pulling full power for hours at a time, connected to a panel that also feeds everything else in the house. The electrical work behind the charger is what determines whether the installation is safe, code-compliant, covered by warranty, and worth the money you spend on the hardware.
We install home chargers for every EV brand sold in the Twin Cities, and we size the circuit to your actual driving and your actual panel — not to a generic product spec.
Your panel is
the real variable.
Twin Cities homes span more than a century of electrical standards. The age of your panel matters more than anything else on an EV charger install.
100A, 150A and 200A panels
Most Twin Cities homes fall into one of three panel categories, and each one changes what a home charger installation can realistically deliver.
- 200A service: the standard in homes built after 1990. A 48A Level 2 charger usually goes in without any calculation concerns.
- 150A service: common in 1970s and 1980s homes. Often clears for a 40A or 48A charger, especially with gas heat and gas cooking.
- 100A service: common in pre-1960 Minneapolis and St. Paul homes. A 32A or 40A charger with a smart load management device usually works; a 200A upgrade is sometimes the better answer.
What we do when the panel is tight
When the load calculation shows your panel cannot carry the charger you want, there are three practical answers. We quote each one honestly, so you can pick the right trade-off.
- Downsize the charger: a 32A or 40A Level 2 charger instead of 48A. Still refills most EVs overnight.
- Smart load management: a device that pauses the charger when the home needs the power for other loads. Keeps the panel safe without a service upgrade.
- 200A service upgrade: the cleanest long-term answer. Unlocks full 48A charging plus headroom for future electrical additions.
We quote the option we think is right for your situation, not the option that makes us the most money.
Every residential install
includes the same scope.
No matter which charger you choose or how complex the run is, the residential installation scope is consistent. Here is what we do on every job.
Electrical work
- Load calculation — including existing continuous loads
- Dedicated 240V circuit from panel to parking location
- Correct breaker for the charger's amperage
- Proper conductor sizing for continuous duty
- Weather-rated conduit and fittings for garage or exterior mounting
- Sub-panel at the garage when the run requires it
- Trenching or directional boring for detached or alley garages
Permits, testing and setup
- Permit pulled with your city — Minneapolis, St. Paul, or any suburb
- Inspection scheduled and met on site
- Charger mounted at proper height with correct cable routing
- Terminations torque-tested to manufacturer specification
- Live charging session verified on the actual vehicle
- App, scheduling and daily-use walkthrough before we leave
- Warranty documentation for the circuit workmanship
Home types we
install in every week.
Every home is different, but a handful of situations come up repeatedly across the Twin Cities. Here is how we handle each one.
Attached garage, short run
The most common case. Circuit runs from the basement or utility room panel out to the garage wall, usually 20 to 40 feet. Typically finishes in four to six hours.
→ 02Detached garage, buried run
Common in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Richfield and Coon Rapids. Circuit runs from the house panel, under the yard, to a sub-panel or junction at the garage. Trenching or directional boring included.
→ 03Alley garage in older neighborhoods
St. Paul and South Minneapolis blocks were platted with rear alleys. The run usually goes from the house panel under the yard to the garage, with a sub-panel and a charger mounted above the alley plow line.
→ 04Tuck-under garage in split-levels
Common in Richfield, Bloomington and parts of Eagan. The charger mounts on the interior wall of the lower level, and the run is short because the panel is often already on that level.
→ 05Exterior wall for driveway parking
No garage needed. We mount the charger on the exterior wall of the house near the parking spot, using weather-rated conduit and fittings, with snow clearance above the plow line.
→ 06Condo and townhome installs
Possible with the right building setup. We coordinate with the property manager and can provide documentation for HOA or board approval.
